A bottle of oil in an enamel cup with stones in it for Neal’s Yard Organic Geranium Essential Oil Review

CONS:

  • Limited availability outside the UK (prices may be different to the above listed)
  • Blue glass is more difficult to find a dedicated recycling bin for
  • Slightly more expensive than other brands – but markedly more potent, and highly ethical

A bottle of oil near stones and a potted geranium for the Neal’s Yard Organic Geranium Essential Oil Review

VERDICT:

Such an exquisite fragrance! While floral and feminine, it’s also full of earth and musk. The scent is synergistic with my own natural body smell, making the best perfume match. I get compliments ALL the time. Little do they know the secret to a sexy scent is pure simplicity!

I mix 2 drops with a ½ teaspoon of almond oil and apply to my arms, chest, and tummy and it lasts all day. It’s invigorating and quite simply delightful. I also put it in my diffuser and home made deodorant and it’s lovely lovely lovely.

I’m so impressed by Neal’s Yard’s ethical credentials, that besides the myriad health and beauty benefits, I’m in love. The quality and intensity is top shelf, and has never faded over the 6 month duration I’ve had this bottle.

My only snivel about this was the actual bottle; blue is the Neal’s Yard signature color, but my local recycling does not take blue bottles, presenting me with a bit of a disposal dilemma. The plastic dripper was also temperamental, and I had to give it a good shake to get droplets out.

And while it’s slightly more expensive than other organic geranium oils on the market, I know my money is supporting animal, environmental, producer, and consumer welfare – which is always worth it.

Bottles and pots full of oil with spoons and leaves and rocks for the Naissance Organic Castor Oil Review

VERDICT:

Castor oil is one of the most important ingredients in my cupboard. I use it daily, and it saved my skin from 15 years of humiliating acne.

I’ve been buying liters of castor oil from Naissance for years. Besides my skin, it became a huge part of my healing journey; I spent over a decade battling debilitating digestive issues, and I used castor oil compresses for detoxification. So powerful.

All I would say is that you should be mindful of what you wear if you’re going to go rolling around in the stuff; it did leave some greasy stains that I’ve had trouble shifting. Small price to pay, I’d say, but keep your cashmere in the closet.

I talk about Naissance a ton because they’re the beauty bomb. Aside from being my fave UK essential and elemental oil supplier, they kick butt at bulk buying (bulk is the absolute best way to get high quality health and beauty supplies for cheap without compromising on quality or ethics).

You can’t find oils in these quantities at this quality anywhere else, without going full-on wholesale. Plus, when you can buy in larger quantities, it means less packaging and transport all the way around – and I’m always happy to know that my vanity is paving the way for a greener, safer, healthier planet.

I recommend castor oil to the entire planet, cosmos, and all divine beings.

CONS:

  • Limited availability outside the UK (prices may be different to the above listed)
  • Can be highly irritating to skin, eyes, and mucous membranes if used undiluted (as with all essential oils)
  • Caution should be used by all pregnant and breastfeeding women when using any essential oil
  • Non organic

VERDICT:

Now, I’m a stickler for organic; somehow (entirely my own oversight) I bought non-organic by accident. Total goose. So I reluctantly admit that this does not bear the usual credentials I look for and live by.

Saying that, it is 100% pure and natural. I source most of my oils from Naissance, and I know they’re very conscious of ethics and the integrity of their goods. I let myself off the hook this time, because I know I am in good, green hands.

And it must be said, I LOVE this cedarwood essential oil. Oh, bliss. While it’s often touted as a masculine/men’s oil, I’m all over it. Cedar smells like sex and trees and earth. I diffuse it and use it in my personal perfume blend almost daily. And while I’ll make sure to get organic next time, I will absolutely be keeping this one on my shelf, next to my crystals and quartz, forever.

I do also lend it to my partner from time to time, and he also loves it. It took me a while to get him weaned off his mainstream cologne, and I did so by luring him in with a cedarwood and organic bergamot mix. So much healthier than those glamorous chemical cocktails with incredible prices. No need, no thanks.

I’ve also blended it with organic tea tree and lemon essential oils for a brisk and bright hair conditioning bar that works a magical little treat on the old tresses.

Since it’s helpful in dealing with cellulite, I like to put a neat drop or two on my dry brush and give my thighs and buns a good detoxifying, lymph-stimulating scrub.

I talk about Naissance a ton, and for good reason. They’re my fave UK essential oil supplier and the shiniest stars when it comes to selling bulk organic elemental healthy and beauty supplies (bulk is the absolute best way to get high quality health and beauty supplies for cheap without compromising on quality or ethics).

You can’t find oils in these quantities at this quality anywhere else, without going full on wholesale. Plus, when you can buy in larger quantities, it means less packaging and transport all the way around – and I’m always happy to know that my vanity is paving the way for a greener, safer, healthier planet.

Definitely recommended to all ladies and gents of the land, especially yon Brits.

VERDICT:

While I love the health and beauty benefits of rosemary oil, I’ve always found the scent to be a bit blunt and almost cloying. I resisted.

On a recent quest to raise my extremely low blood pressure, I got some of this organic rosemary oil from Naissance to try and mediate the situation. It was quite the delightful surprise to find it to have a beautifully floral quality.

So much so, that have added it to my morning magnesium oil and essential perfume blend. It’s incredibly earthy and strong, but not overpowering or masculine. It’s grounded, woodsy, fresh, and invigorating. I use it in homemade cleaning products, soap, and shampoo/conditioner bar.

This rosemary oil is divine. The jury is still out on whether it improves hypotension (low blood pressure), since that story is a work in progress. I don’t even mind, though; it’s become such a staple in my

Definitely recommending to all my sweet, beautiful biscuits, especially those in the UK.

PRODUCT:

Whole Foods Organic Vanilla Honey Lip Balm – $1.99/.15oz

OVERVIEW:

It’s simple, easily overlooked, and the kind of product that falls to the bottom of the makeup bag, forgotten.

While the world is filled with glamorous glosses and high-tech tints, I want to introduce this humble little sausage, my good friend, balm of the lip.

CONS:

  • Only available in the US

A plate of honey toast with Organic Vanilla Honey Lip Balm next to it.

VERDICT:

I hate having dry lips. Luckily, this lip balm is the shiniest star ever. I keep one in every pocket and wear it every day. I have never found a better lip balm anywhere, ever.

Since I currently live in the UK, I literally buy dozens of these when I go back home stateside. In fact, I begin to panic when I realize my stocks are running low.

Without exception, this is the BEST lip balm ever. So cheap and humble, yet a beautiful little balm bombshell. So many of the balms I’ve tried (natural, cheap, expensive, organic, you name it) are just rubbish. They sit on top of your lips like a plastic casing that somehow makes your lips feel even more chapped than before.

Nope. Not with my Vanilla Honey honey. Totally nourishing, moisturizing, and balanced. You completely forget about it once it’s on (or you go to kiss someone – at which point they are overcome with the heavenly scent of freshly baked muffins).

Plus, the ingredient list would make any mama proud; totally pure, clean, and organic. No monkey business. While I’d suggest you share a piece of cake with your boo instead, you probably could eat this stuff and get pretty far in life.

Highly recommended for all organic loving, eco-caring, practical beauties.

A woman placing a bouquet of lavender onto a messy desk

VERDICT:

A must have for every natural beauty mama. I can’t even handle this stuff – it’s good for everything. I always keep a bottle handy; it’s like the magical unicorn of essential oils.

Acne scars? Boom. Weird itchy skin patch? Boom. Bit of the old crows feet situation happening? Boom. Lady Lav is your friend every time.

Naissance is my favorite essential oil supplier, and has been for some years. I’m a huge fan of bulk buying (the absolute best way to get high quality health and beauty supplies for cheap without compromising on quality or ethics). You can get larger than average quantities of oils for excellent prices, and I’ve never found a better deal anywhere else.

This lavender oil is exquisite. With a true lavender scent (sometimes low quality versions smell like cheap soap) and highest potency, a single 50ml bottle will last for the best part of year, even when used on a regular basis.

I use it to fragrance my laundry, in my oil diffuser, as a perfume, medicinally, and in my homemade skin oil blend. My partner makes a divine lavender and lemon soap that is better than any commercial soap I’ve ever used (even though we used the lowest amount of recommended essential oils in the recipe, the aroma is intense).

Highly recommended to all, especially my UK based honies.

Body Source/Pro Breeze Ultrasonic Aroma Diffuser with an air plant, home made soap and some plants

PRODUCT:

Body Source/Pro Breeze Ultrasonic Aroma Diffuser for Essential Oils – £19.87

OVERVIEW:

This diffuser uses ultrasonic vibrations to instantly vaporize water and essential oils for pure, clean dispersion. It’ll make your house smell like a woodland fairytale and lift your spirits to the moon.

Unlike burners, the integrity of the oil is preserved since there is no heat involved. The diffuser does not emit any smoke or produce weird residues that stick to the walls or house linens (like incense – yuck). There are no chemical additives necessary (as with many oil diffusing sticks – which come with such real life warnings as: harmful to aquatic life with long lasting effects or causes serious eye irritation… um no thanks).

And while it may seem like an odd choice for an eco-beauty review site, it is relevant; not only do diffused oils have beauty applications, they also directly impact your mental, emotional and physical wellbeing (and we all know that true beauty is an amalgamation of these).

PROS:

  • Disperses essential oils without heating, distorting, or destroying their integrity
  • 7 different light colors, plus color-changing mode, or discrete non-lit mode (aqua, violet, chartreuse, fuscia, turquoise, red, gold)
  • Light/dark brightness setting
  • Has continuous stream or 2 intermittent modes that will last 1-2 hours respectively
  • Intermittent mode lasts 6.5 hours when filled to max capacity (100ml)
  • Constant mode lasts 3.5 hours when filled to max capacity (100m)
  • Automatically turns off when it runs out of water
  • Never gets hot
  • Economical aromatherapy option – a few drops can fill an entire house with lovely aromas
  • Super quiet
  • Energy efficient LED light
  • Humidifies the air
  • Plugs in – no need to worry about batteries
  • Can be used medicinally, for mood, stress, home, or beauty purposes when paired with the right essential oil
  • Especially good for colds and respiratory issues when paired with the appropriate essential oil
  • Simple, elegant, minimal design
  • Not reliant upon candles, fire, heat or chemicals
  • Affordable
  • Can purchase from Amazon

Body Source/Pro Breeze Ultrasonic Aroma Diffuser near a potted plant, oils, and rocks

CONS:

  • Scent runs out quickly when set to continuous stream mode
  • Humidity increase might be problematic for damp prone houses
  • Only seems to be available in the UK

VERDICT:

I have tried several different diffuser options in my day; and frankly they were all rubbish. I assumed it was the preserve of mystical apothecaries to smell even half-way delightful without chemical grossness at play.

Not to mention, tons of the humidifying diffusers just look like massive spaceships – not subtle or charming.

However! My Body Source/Pro Breeze Ultrasonic Aroma Diffuser is a game changer and dream maker. In short: it’s love.

It has sent me on an essential oil buying frenzy, and now my home smells like Shakespearean sonnets and wild rivers. The scented cloud puffs manage to fill my entire house, with a grand total of about ten drops per 6.5 hour session of intermittent mode use.

Aromatherapy sessions can be expensive, but you can reap the benefits of mood enhancement, neuro-stimulation, beauty boosting, and health improvement all in one go.

I love:

  • geranium for all things skin
  • eucalyptus, tea tree, and peppermint for colds and congestion
  • lavender, bergamot, and chamomile for calming anxiety and inducing sleep
  • lemon, cedar, and sandalwood for zesty vim
  • **My UK essential oil supplier is Naissance

Body Source/Pro Breeze Ultrasonic Aroma Diffuser with an air plant

I did find that the continuous use mode spent the oils very quickly. While it was a potent initial blast, I did have to top up the oils for long term dispersion. Whereas, the oils managed to hold their punch all the through when used on intermittent mode. I suppose it depends on what you’re after; if you need your room to smell like boudoir d’amour quick sticks, use continuous mode. But if you don’t mind slow-and-steady-wins-the-race, try the intermittent.

Be sure to use high-quality oils that have no extra binders or sneaky ingredients; I unwittingly put some skanky mix from a friend in there and it took WEEKS (plus several vinegar soaks and baking soda scrubs) for the smell to come out of the plastic. No bueno.

Pro-Breeze seems to have teamed up with/been taken over by Body Source, which is why my model has slightly different branding to those currently available via amazon.co.uk.

VERDICT:

I bough this primarily so that my partner could make soap with it. It’s an excellent soft oil pairing that is extremely nourishing, conditioning, and preserving of both skin and hair.

I have strange, crispy dry hair that doesn’t tolerate astringent cleaners or any alcohol based products (that stuff sneaks into everything!), so I had my partner make me a hair conditioning bar.

The bar is creamy as a French pastry puff, and has done my mop top no end of good. Super calming and nourishing, it doesn’t leave behind any sticky residues or greasy afterglow.

It’s also tippity pippity top for homemade lotions, cosmetics, salves, and concoctions. With naturally high amounts of Vitamin E content, it constantly works to heal blemishes and erase scarring – safely and effectively. It doesn’t happen over night – but anyone who’s selling those kinds of claims, has an emergency exit they’re not telling you about.

Home-brew beauty recipes often call for olive oil, but I’ve found this oil to be the most stable and moisturizing of all elemental oils I’ve tried. If you are into DIY beauty, invest in organic avocado oil and watch the quality and shelf life of your goods blow you eternal kisses.

All those mundane tasks on your to-do list that seem boring and unimportant.

Every single choice you make has the opportunity to impact our earth.

I recently tested a set of products that bring this vision to life – of living with purpose, allowing every detail to fill with significance, and aligning my vanity with my ethics. Making my beauty routine beautiful. Protecting the earth and sky and water as it serves and protects me in return.

Akamai Essentials Kit

Akamai is different. They’re not trying to sell – in fact, they’re trying to get you to buy less. Their ethos is Less is More, actively encouraging you to use less, wash less, worry less. They are keen to help you break free of The Personal Care Industrial Complex– which would see you using, buying, and spending more more more on products to fill your life with nonsense, the oceans with pollution, and the landfill with hideous rubbish.

Akamai is not about products. It’s about ideas. Creating true beauty consciousness and a beautiful mindset. Creating a lifestyle that effortlessly integrates your individual needs with beautiful simplicity.

Developing intelligent health, wellness, and hygiene practices that protect and preserve our bodies and our earth. They rebel against consumerism by championing multi purpose products that eliminate the need for a cabinet full of potions and lotions (that are often plum full of nasty chemicals and dodgy ingredients.

The Review

My husband and I both had the pleasure of getting cozy with the Akamai Essentials Kit– which consists of two 3-in-1 Bars, Mineral Toothpaste, and Skin Fuel. The packaging is minimal and recyclable. Thorough instructions are included for optimal use. The kit is intended to last for two months for one person.

This is what happened:

Mineral Toothpaste:

Unlike any natural toothpaste I’ve ever tried before, this formula is not sweet. In fact, it’s a little salty (due to mineral rich sea salt being in the mix). Very strange to begin with, but not at all unpleasant. It’s free of all sweeteners, and the lovely mix of essential oils makes for a bit of a Christmas party in my mouth.

After several weeks of use, both my husband and myself are impressed. Previous experience with other natural toothpastes left our teeth and gums sensitive and irritable. Akamai’s remineralizing formula actually acts to bolster the integrity of teeth and gums, remove toxins, and gently fight bacteria (preserving the natural micro-biome for self regulation – very important!)

You can even dab it on cold sores and pimples for inflammation reduction. Genius.

3-in-1 Bar:

I was most skeptical about this one. Our 3-in-1 friend is touted for use as a shampoo, shaving soap and general cleanser. Wary of using “soap” on my hair and skin, I was scared of consequences (I am sensitive to harsh detergents, chemicals, and fragrances – plus, most soaps strip out all the goodness, leaving nothing but dry desert behind).

However, encouraged by the packaging which states, “Get clean in a wiser way. Reality is, the less you mess with your skin and hair, the healthier they will be. Just soap the stinky parts,” I proceeded with caution.

What a pleasant surprise! Although it felt weird to rub a bar of soap over my hair, it was a wonderful shampoo. I only wash my hair every two  (I have strange problem child hair that is both crispy and greasy) and Mr. 3-in-1 did the job beautifully.

Unlike traditional shampoos, it’s not foamy, brightly colored, or heavily scented. Simple, natural ingredients make for a gently sudsing cleanse that is creamy, but light. When used on the skin, it is smooth and nourishing. I generally hate soap because it feels more like industrial waste removal agents are hijacking the top 6 layers of my skin—but this stuff is built for long term relationships, with your overall and lasting wellbeing very much in mind.

A blue bell in the forest.

Skin Fuel:

I love oil for skin. Once I was brave enough to make the switch 5 years ago, I have never looked back. It’s the only way I cleanse and moisturize.

Saying that, I have dry skin that is acne prone. I have spent years honing my skin regimen, and tuned it to a place of perfection for my set of circumstances.

Skin Fuel is a mix of oils, and I was apprehensive about complicating matters. However, my fears were soon allayed: Skin Fuel sinks in quickly (unlike most elemental oils), never leaving a greasy finish. You can put in on any time of day, multiple times of day, and under any make-up. It sinks in and leaves my face fresh and glowing, but never shiny. My reactive skin remained totally calm and happy. Very balanced and no acne flare ups.

My husband loves it too (it smells of Rosemary, which is perfectly unisex); it’s great for sensitive skin after a close shave, preventing razor rash and spots.

It can also be used as a hair conditioner, beard oil, aftersun, aftershave, scalp treatment, and soothing salve.

A Final Thought on Akamai

Guess what- after all that benefit that my husband and I personally enjoyed, we saved the planet a little bit. Cared for the bees. Let the deer drink fresh water from a mountain stream. Allowed farmers to grow and harvest the ingredients without life threatening exposure to chemicals and pesticides.

Choose beauty that matters. Care about how every decision you make impacts the world and its creatures.
